In Countee Cullen's poem "Heritage," the author reflects on his identity and heritage as an African American. He begins by asking, "What is Africa to me?" He lists images of Africa—like the "Copper sun," "jungle star," and "strong bronzed men"—that seem distant and foreign, yet they are a part of his ancestry. Cullen feels disconnected from Africa, separated by centuries of history. He imagines himself lying down, hearing the distant sounds of drums and feeling the rhythm of Africa in his blood. He describes his pride and distress tied to his "somber flesh and skin," filled with the "dark blood" of his African ancestors. As the poem continues, Cullen dismisses the exotic aspects of Africa that are unfamiliar to him, like bats, cats, and snakes. He feels removed from the raw beauty and passion of the African jungle, where love and nature intertwine. Cullen's struggle with his identity intensifies as he grapples with societal pressures and his Christian faith. He acknowledges a conflict between his outward devotion to Christianity and his inner doubts and desires for a faith that reflects his racial experiences. In the end, Cullen confronts the challenge of reconciling his heritage with the expectations of a civilized society. He fears losing himself and his roots in a world that does not fully acknowledge or appreciate his cultural background. Through "Heritage," Countee Cullen invites us to explore the complexities of identity, cultural heritage, and the struggle for self-acceptance within a society that often marginalizes or misunderstands those who are different. He poignantly expresses the longing to find peace and belonging while navigating the tensions between tradition and modernity, pride and conformity.
